PF6 Gearbox | How can you solve the Renault Trafic / Master, Nissan Primastar, Vauxhall Vivaro/Movano and transmission issues
Transmission issues can be common with the Renault Trafic. Their gearbox found in these vans is known to bring in some issues, but thankfully there are ways to solve this issue and get around any problems that might arise. Here you have a list with tips and tricks to get started.
Common issues found in the PF6 gearbox
Most of the time, the PF6 gearbox will either have a complete failure, or it has bearing wear. At first, you will hear some humming sounds if you’re going over 40 mph. Either that, or you can hear a whine when you choose the 6th speed. A lot of car owners ignore these issues, but if you do so, then the bearing damage leads to failure. In the end, you will be spending a lot more money on repairs or just replacing the vehicle.
If you check closely, you will see that bearing rollers tend to deal with a lot of wear. At some point, the retainer cage is unable to support them and they will end up dropping out of position. That’s why you are dealing with that whining sound as you operate your vehicle. Thankfully, if you deal with these issues early on, the repairs are quite affordable.
Most of the time, the PF6 gearbox will have very dirty oil and in some cases it can even be contaminated. When that happens, the best thing that you can do is to change the oil from time to time. It will help ensure that your vehicle runs smoothly and the PF6 gearbox is clean. This also means the transmission’s lifespan will increase, and that’s certainly something to take into consideration. When the bearings fail completely, your gears will collide and eventually they will be stripped of all their teeth. In case you reach this point, then you will have to replace it with a new recon gearbox. That’s quite expensive, not to mention you are unable to use your vehicle during this time.
Other types of PF6 gearbox damage
Aside from the bearing problems, there can also be some gear issues. Some owners state that it’s hard to select the 2nd, 3rd and even the 4th gear. In fact, there can be drivers that lost their gear, and when that happens you must perform a gear change. To make things even more challenging, the 3rd and 4th gear need to be replaced at once, since you can only get them via a kit.
All the aforementioned vehicles have the same gearbox, and the challenge is that such issues can appear even at a low mileage. Some Vauxhall models ended up with problems at 22k miles, and they needed replacement gears and even full bearing replacements. Older models had such problems at 60k or even 120k miles.
